SNAP Recipients Offered Tailored Membership
Nearly 18% of households receive SNAP benefits in Illinois, according to a 2020 analysis and published reports
CHICAGO – HUB312, a mobility center located in the heart of Chicago’s Millennium Park, aims to bring equity to the bike path through a unique and socially conscious offering.
Operated by Shift Transit, HUB312 looks to connect people interested in living an eco-friendly, healthy and active lifestyle. Chief among the cycling center’s offerings: the Chicago-For-All Equity Pass, $5-a-month to those who qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Illinois. Nearly 18% of households receive SNAP benefits in Illinois, according to a 2020 analysis. And while published reports and U.S. Census Data show approximately 870,000 people ride their bikes to work in the United States—many of those commuters work jobs in urban areas like Chicago.
“The Equity Pass is an affordable asset to anyone who uses their bicycle as a primary mode of transportation,” said Phil LeDonne, General Manager of the HUB312 facility. “For just $5 a month, those who qualify will have access to secure storage of their bike, showers, lockers and even a steamer to look their best before heading into work. We also have more than 30 years of combined experience on staff working in our bike repair shop.”
Illinois has seen a significant push in its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts, including the recent announcement that state government is establishing the Office of Equity. Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed an executive order that also appointed a new position in Springfield: Chief Equity Officer. Additionally, Cook County is also preparing to celebrate its Third Annual Racial Equity Week. While promoting forms of equity is top of mind for many in the state—HUB312’s efforts are uniquely geared toward pedal power in Chicago.
“Equity at HUB312 is all about making sure every Chicagoan has the opportunity to use the facility to lead a safe, healthy and active lifestyle,” Shift Transit CEO Eddie Inlow said. “We’re proud to say that HUB312 is helping promote wellness through active transportation for all of Chicago’s residents through our Equity Pass option.”
Chicago boasts more than 200 miles of on-street protected, buffered, and shared bike lanes, as well as off-street paths, including the crown jewel: its 18.5-mile Lakefront Trail. It’s no surprise that a recent study ranked Chicago in the top 15% of best biking cities.
In addition to the Equity Pass, there are three HUB312 membership options available:
Annual pass ($250)
Monthly pass ($50)
Day pass ($15)
Atop all of those in-demand amenities, HUB312 is also amassing its fleet of rentable bicycles and has plans for guided tours for Chicago natives and visitors alike.
