Historic ‘Bike Spike’ Comes with Unexpected Surge in Bicycle Repair Wait Times—But Not at HUB312

While cycle stores see unprecedented demand nationwide, HUB312’s newly launched repair shop in bustling Millennium Park offers a fresh alternative to lengthy lines with competitive prices

CHICAGO – Since the start of the pandemic, thousands of commuters have replaced public transportation with cycling to work. This phenomenon, often referred to as the “Bike Spike,” is occurring in cities all over the world—including Chicago, and with it comes a skyrocketing demand for parts and maintenance. Enter Chicago’s brand-new mobility center: HUB312.

Having opened its doors in August within the McDonald’s Cycle Center in Millennium Park, HUB312’s miracle suite of services boasts a crowned jewel amidst the bike spike: its staff of experienced mechanics with no backlog of repairs. The bike spike means more chains that need tightening, brakes that need aligning, and deflated tires that need filling. Last year, bicycle sales reportedly rose 65% over 2019’s numbers—and they’re expected to surge again next year. As Chicagoans continue to embrace the benefits of a socially distant, health-conscious commute, HUB312 is at the ready to offer its full suite of services.

Visitors will find a holistic approach to bike services at HUB312—like a package deal adjusting your breaks, inflating tires, chain lubrication, and tightening nuts and bolts for just $40. Seasoned staff paired with competitive prices and zero backlog nestled in the heart of downtown Chicago have landed HUB312 in an advantageous position amidst the bike spike.

“Over the course of the pandemic Shift Transit has facilitated millions of rides as people look for alternative transportation options – the evidence of the bike spike is clear in bike rentals as well as bike sales,” said Eddie Inlow, CEO of Shift Transit which operates HUB312. “Being able to provide that option is something we’re deeply proud of. We expect to see the bike spike trend continue, and ultimately, our goal is to create a culture that encourages that healthy, sustainable, active transit option.”

While it was originally anticipated that the bike spike trend would begin to subside throughout the pandemic, there is currently no indication of any significant drop-off. Some cyclists are pulling bikes out of storage that haven’t been serviced since pre-pandemic times. The HUB312 bike shop offers a range of tune-up options from $50 to $200—the latter including the repacking of bearings and a frame polish that will have your bike looking—and riding—like brand new.

Additionally, HUB312 offers a plethora of services to aid cyclists beyond its crack team of mechanics. With high-security bike storage—including 24/7 remote surveillance, personal lockers, showers, towel service and more, HUB312 offers certainty in a time where few can guarantee it. As the increase in demand for bicycles continues, so will HUB312’s steadfast dedication to serving the active transit community. Aside from its top-tier amenities, HUB312 is also assembling its fleet of bicycles available for rent and will soon be providing guided tours. Be sure to keep an eye on HUB312.com for more details.

“I think it's imperative that Chicagoans know that they aren’t bound to things like trains, buses and rideshares,” said Phil LeDonne, HUB312’s General Manager. “The goal of HUB312 is to offer cyclists a home base for all of their needs such as bike storage, a full-service repair shop with over 30 years of combined experience across our mechanics, and amenities like showers, lockers, a steamer, as well as support to new cyclists who are looking to make biking part of their everyday life.”

SNAP Recipients Offered Tailored Membership

Nearly 18% of households receive SNAP benefits in Illinois, according to a 2020 analysis and published reports

CHICAGO – HUB312, a mobility center located in the heart of Chicago’s Millennium Park, aims to bring equity to the bike path through a unique and socially conscious offering.

Operated by Shift Transit, HUB312 looks to connect people interested in living an eco-friendly, healthy and active lifestyle. Chief among the cycling center’s offerings: the Chicago-For-All Equity Pass, $5-a-month to those who qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Illinois. Nearly 18% of households receive SNAP benefits in Illinois, according to a 2020 analysis. And while published reports and U.S. Census Data show approximately 870,000 people ride their bikes to work in the United States—many of those commuters work jobs in urban areas like Chicago.

“The Equity Pass is an affordable asset to anyone who uses their bicycle as a primary mode of transportation,” said Phil LeDonne, General Manager of the HUB312 facility. “For just $5 a month, those who qualify will have access to secure storage of their bike, showers, lockers and even a steamer to look their best before heading into work. We also have more than 30 years of combined experience on staff working in our bike repair shop.”

Illinois has seen a significant push in its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts, including the recent announcement that state government is establishing the Office of Equity. Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed an executive order that also appointed a new position in Springfield: Chief Equity Officer. Additionally, Cook County is also preparing to celebrate its Third Annual Racial Equity Week. While promoting forms of equity is top of mind for many in the state—HUB312’s efforts are uniquely geared toward pedal power in Chicago.

“Equity at HUB312 is all about making sure every Chicagoan has the opportunity to use the facility to lead a safe, healthy and active lifestyle,” Shift Transit CEO Eddie Inlow said. “We’re proud to say that HUB312 is helping promote wellness through active transportation for all of Chicago’s residents through our Equity Pass option.”

Chicago boasts more than 200 miles of on-street protected, buffered, and shared bike lanes, as well as off-street paths, including the crown jewel: its 18.5-mile Lakefront Trail. It’s no surprise that a recent study ranked Chicago in the top 15% of best biking cities.

In addition to the Equity Pass, there are three HUB312 membership options available:

Annual pass ($250)

  • Secure bike parking
  • Dedicated lockers + $100
  • Shower facilities
  • Convenient access to on-site bike shop
  • Water-filling station
  • 5 free Day Passes to share with friends
  • Towel service included

Monthly pass ($50)

  • Secure bike parking
  • Locker access
  • Shower Facilities
  • Convenient access to on-site bike shop
  • Water-filling station

Day pass ($15)

  • Secure bike parking for the day
  • Locker access
  • Shower facilities
  • Water-filling station

Atop all of those in-demand amenities, HUB312 is also amassing its fleet of rentable bicycles and has plans for guided tours for Chicago natives and visitors alike.

Returning to the Office Brings Opportunity for New, Healthier Commute for Chicagoans

Returning to the Office Brings Opportunity for New, Healthier Commute for Chicagoans

CHICAGO – As work-from-home policies end or morph into hybrid schedules, Chicagoans are returning to downtown, and with their return comes lengthy, traffic-filled commutes. Instead of sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic, Chicagoans can elect to take an active commute, skipping traffic jams while boosting physical and mental health. As a renowned biking city, Chicago offers many options to help its active commuters navigate the city, and the newest amenity is HUB312, located downtown just steps from the Jay Pritzker Pavilion.

A popular perk of working from home was being able to get that hour plus that you’d lose each morning and afternoon to traffic,” said Phil LeDonne, General Manager of HUB312. “People filled that ‘extra time’ with exercise, hobbies, and taking care of responsibilities around the home. But now that the commute is back, Chicagoans are losing those productive hours and want solutions. With HUB312 now open, active commutes are more doable than ever, so you can get around traffic while fitting in a morning workout to boost your physical and mental health.”

Operated by Shift Transit, HUB312 is Chicago’s active transportation hub located conveniently in Millennium Park. HUB312 offers four membership rates, Annual Pass ($250), Monthly Pass ($50), Day Pass ($15), and Equity Pass ($5 per month), with each membership offering access to HUB312’s full amenities, including clean showers with complementary shampoo, soap, and towel services, onsite retail and bike repair shop, secure indoor bike parking, locker room, and a stand-up steamer.

“An active commute certainly has a number of benefits, but it also brings additional challenges, like where to park your bike for the day, what bike-friendly route should you take, and how do you freshen up after a healthy sweat during your commute,” said LeDonne. “HUB312 is here to help you make an active commute a part of your daily routine. You’ll have an accessible, reliable, and safe location to park your bike, get quick repairs and maintenance, and a stand-up steamer and showers to make sure you’re relaxed and ready to tackle the workday ahead or enjoy what downtown Chicago has to offer.”

It’s well known that exercise improves mood and physical health and exercising outdoors further increases these benefits. With the time loss associated with sitting in traffic, commuters can opt to ride a bicycle to the office, inserting outdoor exercise into the daily routine. Active commutes, such as traveling to work on a bicycle, can provide a host of benefits, from helping regulate sleep patterns and relieving stress to reducing the chance to develop cardiovascular disease and boosting cognitive health.
